More arrests announced in privatizations cases

BELGRADE Police Director Milorad Veljovic has said that the police were checking the disputed privatizations, "but also working on other cases." Commenting on reports in some media outlets that "arrests are expected because of the controversial privatizations," Veljović said:

"There will be arrests - which ones, we'll see in the coming days."

"I do not want to prejudge matters, the police are do their job, and whether this is about privatizations or other cases does not matter at all, the police are doing their job and certainly there will be arrests," he was quoted as saying.

Attending the same event, PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić then "specified": "You will be informed in time, via the newspapers."

The Belgrade-based daily Blic wrote on Wednesday that each of the 24 investigations has been completed, "which the EU required," and that over the next week, "several big arrests" can be expected.

The article quoted a police source as saying that the investigations have been completed and that by the end of the month, "just as the First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić and Police Director Milorad Veljović announced," those cases would be "finished."
