NEW YORK Ban Ki-moon welcomed the peaceful conduct of the elections on Kosovo and is encouraged by the positive initial reports from international observers and UNMIK. The successful holding of local elections throughout Kosovo constitutes a milestone for, both, the normalization process between Belgrade and Pristina and the enhancement of democratic institutions in Kosovo, the UN secretary-general was quoted as saying in a press release sent to Tanjug. Ban underlined the importance of the continued progress in the dialogue for the consolidation of peace and stability in the region. The local elections in Kosovo were completed on Sunday, December 1, with the second round of mayoral voting in 25 municipalities. The elections went on without major irregularities and incidents, except in the eastern Kosovo municipality of Partes, where unidentified persons stormed a polling station and destroyed election materials.
