BELGRADE The War Crimes Chamber of the Belgrade District Court sentenced again on Monday Ilija Jurisic to 12 years in prison. The former war-time commander of the Bosnia-Herzegovina police was found guilty of ordering an attack on a Yugoslav Army (JNA) convoy in Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina, in 1992, which resulted in the deaths of 51 soldiers. Former Bosnian official sentenced to 12 years Jurisic did not show up for the sentencing because he was in hospital in Tuzla, where he was admitted on November 28, his lawyer Djordje Dozet stated. This is the second sentence against Jurisic by a trial court, since the original verdict was annulled by the Court of Appeal, which ordered a retrial before a new chamber of judges. The court found Jurisic guilty because he, as the officer on duty at a Tuzla security outpost, ordered the attack on the JNA withdrawing from its barracks - even though an agreement had been reached between the authorities of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to grant the retreating troops safe passage. According to the indictment, the attack on the convoy in Tuzla on May 15, 1992 carried out by the Muslim police and paramilitary unit Patriotic League left at least 51 soldiers killed and 50 more were wounded, and several ambulance vehicles were also destroyed in the incident. At the beginning of the retrial, Jurisic pleaded not guilty and said that he had not been the commander and that he had not been able to make any decisions independently. Jurisic was arrested in Belgrade on May 14, 2007. The Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor took over the case from the Belgrade Military Prosecutor's Office in 2004. Jurisic was released pending a retrial in October 2010, after the first sentence was repealed. He attended all the court sessions since then, apart from the last. Asked whether his client would come to Serbia again after the verdict on Monday, Dozet said that he "did not know this," but added that he would "certainly appeal against the ruling."
