NEW YORK Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has said that he is "certain" Serbia will become the European Union's next member. In an interview for CNN, Dacic said, "We would like Serbia to become a member of the European Union as quickly as possible," and added that he expected this to happen "within the next ten years." PM expects Serbia to join EU "within next 10 years" Dacic said that a solution for Kosovo was "not easy to find, especially in this phase where things have gone too far," and that a "better and more just" solution could have been found earlier, "avoiding the war and tensions in the region." "We have always made it clear that we cannot and will not try to bring our problems to the EU with us. This is another reason why we are conducting this open dialogue in order to normalize the relationship and solve our problems before accession." "But that does not mean a change of policy when it comes to recognizing Kosovo," he added. Speaking about the economy, he singled out the country's unemployment rate - which CNN said was "25 percent, sitting below only Spain and Greece in the EU" - noting that "discussing economic reforms in Serbia is futile until industrial productivity increases." Dacic also highlighted the importance of foreign investment to country's economic prospects. "These foreign investments will not happen if Serbia is not a part of the modern world," he said. The article noted that according to Eurostat estimates "Serbia's economy contracted 1.7 percent in 2012, due to its close ties with embattled eurozone nations." Should it join the EU, Serbia would be the only member with a free trade agreement with Russia, and Dacic was asked whether that would make it "a gateway toward the east." The prime minister responded by saying that Serbia has always been "the east in the west and the west in the east," and that for this reason - the country's strategic goal was to join the EU. Dacic added that Serbia "also wishes to preserve its old alliances and friendship, such as with Russia and China, and renew friendships with countries like Britain, the U.S., and France" - and also make new friendships with those who have never been its friends before - "such as, for example, Germany."
