BELGRADE Investments in science would improve the economic situation and help overcome the crisis in Serbia. This was the conclusion of the participants in the first regional conference for promotion of science, held in Belgrade. "Serbia should spend more on science" Only 0.5 percent of Serbia's GDP goes to science, which is not enough, as the EU average is two percent, the conference heard. Serbia's Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Tomislav Jovanovic pointed out that more investments in science and education were needed because the two fields were crucially important for economic development. He remarked that there was a need for dialogue between national and local institutions, research organizations, the academic community, media and public. "Serbia's science is a part of the European and world science. Serbia, despite the difficulties, has managed to preserve its intellectual potential," he stressed. The Belgrade University was placed among the top 300 universities on the Shanghai list this year, he noted, adding it was his task to motivate all the state and private universities in Serbia to make their way onto that prestigious list.
