SNS in favor of "new, temporary city council"

BELGRADE The SNS party will propose that a temporary city council should be set up so that Belgrade could function without interruption, says Nebojsa Stefanovic. The head of the party's branch in the capital also reiterated that elections in Belgrade would be held within six months. He spoke a day after Mayor Draga Djilas was removed from office. SNS in favor of "new, temporary city council" Stefanovic told reporters in front of the City Assembly that a new city council "needs to be set up because this is a good way to check the finance and stop uncontrolled spending, adding that excessive spending in Belgrade is scandalous." He expressed his belief that this was why it was important to set up new assembly bodies which will ensure a better control of Belgrade functioning. He reiterated that the public could be informed about t"he further manner of city management" after the talks with coalition partners by the end of the week. Replying to reporters' questions, Stefanovic said that the candidate for the mayor was not discussed and that SNS was "not fighting" in order for the next mayor to come from their ranks. As proof of the claim that Belgrade's public debt was higher than the official EUR 400 million figure,he provided a document dated back to 2010, signed by then PM Mirko Cvetkovic. It shows the city's debt was EUR 500 million, without interest rates. For that reason, Stefanovic said he feared the figure had reached "over EUR 800 million." He also announced that contracts related to the establishment and business dealings of the Bus Plus company would be "checked." According to Stefanovic, "the optimal solution," when it came to public transport fares would be "to give back the collection and revenues to the City Transportation Company (GSP)", but he also noted that "everything depends on the contractual obligations involved, that must be respected."
