BELGRADE Dragan Djilas has said that his removal from office as Belgrade mayor "will not cause a change in the government in Serbia's northern province of Vojvodina." The DS government in Vojvodina is stable and there is no reason to bring up the issue of elections in the province, Djilas, who is the leader of the Democratic Party (DS), said on Tuesday. "DS-led govt. in Vojvodina stable, no need for elections" He added that the government and opposition need to discuss the best steps for the province, especially after the decision of the Serbian Constitutional Court on Vojvodina's jurisdictions. The initiative for Djilas' replacement as the Belgrade mayor was filed by opposition parties in the parliament, the Serb Progressive Party and the Democratic Party of Serbia, on Monday. The Belgrade government comprises the DS and a coalition of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), United Pensioners of Serbia and the Democratic Party of Serbia. Djilas was removed from office as the coalition around the SPS withdrew its support and backed the initiative for his replacement launched by the SNS - the Socialist's main partner on the national level.
