BELGRADE Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Irinej has met with the special envoy of the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Archbishop of Milan Angelo Scola. Cardinal Scola arrived in Belgrade on Thursday evening, when he told reporters that the celebrations of 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan are an opportunity to look to the future and accept responsibility for building a society with a human face, in which all people, regardless of their faith, will be enabled to cooperate on building a new humankind. The pontiff appointed Scola as his special envoy who will on September 20-21 perform a special memorial service in Nis and preside over celebrations on his behalf, as part of the central ceremony marking 1700 years since the Edict of Milan. Asked whether Pope Francis intends to visit Serbia and the region, Cardinal Scola said that it is up to the head of the Roman Catholic Church to decide whether the visit is possible, adding that upon his return to the Vatican, he will inform the pontiff about how the event went. It has been announced that Scola will be on Friday and Saturday in Nis, where he will meet SPC Bishop Jovan and Nis Mayor Zoran Perisic and attend the Edict of Milan celebrations. The Archbishop of Milan will stay in Serbia until September 22, and he will also meet with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic later in the day.

Cardinal Scola arrived in Belgrade on Thursday evening, when he told reporters that the celebrations of 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan are an opportunity to look to the future and accept responsibility for building a society with a human face, in which all people, regardless of their faith, will be enabled to cooperate on building a new humankind.

The pontiff appointed Scola as his special envoy who will on September 20-21 perform a special memorial service in Nis and preside over celebrations on his behalf, as part of the central ceremony marking 1700 years since the Edict of Milan.
