BELGRADE Serbian and NATO officials discussed in Belgrade cooperation in the protection of citizens in emergency situations and international peacekeeping missions. This concerned the missions in which the Serbian police is taking part, it was announced after the meeting held between Interior Ministry State Secretary Vladimir Bozovic and Chief of the NATO Military Liaison Office Belgrade Ornello Baron. Cooperation between Serbian police and NATO According to a release from the Ministry of the Interior (MUP), Bozovic and Baron talked about progress made in the cooperation in the field of protection of citizens in emergency situations through the Individual Partnership Programme (IPP) between NATO and Serbia, which the Serbian Ministry of the Interior sees as a strategic obligation of high priority. Bozovic informed Baron about the work of Serbia’s Emergency Situations Headquarters and Ministry of the Interior’s Emergency Situations Sector, stressing that it is the youngest team within the ministry that has all the necessary experience, but not the personnel and the equipment necessary for operations. Baron said that it is of great importance to sign the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) document, which sets out priorities for Serbia’s cooperation with NATO and provides for organization of a number of courses and exercises in the field of protection of citizens in emergency situations. Following the adoption of the document, Serbia will be able to use the benefits offered by this program, and it will also enable the Serbian government to communicate directly with NATO, without prejudice to the status of Serbia and its relations with the Alliance. Bozovic and Baron agreed that the participation of the Serbian police in peacekeeping missions is of great significance for the country, as through them, the Serbian police is laying the foundation for its future role in the defense of global peace and security.
