LESKOVAC Tomislav Nikolic says that over the past few decades Serbia lagged behind "because the people in power were not the right ones and the timing was not right." But the things are changing slowly, said the Serbian president, "and there will be new investments and jobs, which cannot happen if there is no honesty in Serbia." "Equal conditions for foreign and domestic investors" During his stay in Leskovac, southern Serbia, Nikolic said on Tuesday that the attitude to honesty, moral and integrity has failed. When the right time came for us to get jobs and develop the country and industry, we entered the privatisation process which destroyed all companies and left employees jobless, Nikolic underscored. Noting that the government is to blame for this, Nikolic pointed to high taxes which employers need to pay for hiring a worker and expressed criticism of the drastic difference in funding jobs opened by foreign investors and those opened by local employers. “With such taxes for employees, there can be no new jobs. If the government funds jobs for foreign investors, why does it not fund jobs for local employers as well, instead of leaving them in an unequal position? Why do local investors get EUR 2,000 or 3,000 per employee - and even this sum is difficult to achieve - while foreign investors get EUR 10,000?,” Nikolic asked. At the end of his visit to Leskovac, he attended the delivery of agreements on internship to best graduates in the town assembly. He said that an end has come to Serbia's increasing debt as this is no longer an option, but investments should be made in agriculture, development and industry. The president said that Leskovac should be an industrial city and a city of advanced agricultural entrepreneurs, and that everyone needs to understand that food industry will soon be the main industrial branch pulling Serbia forward. Nikolic said that there is will and enthusiasm and expressed the belief that after the changes in the government, the entire system should function differently. The president reflected on the EU path and noted that Serbia's greatest wish is to win EU membership, but many doors have opened in progressive countries of the world, such as Africa, Asia and Latin America.
