President urges Egypt to reconsider its Kosovo decision

BELGRADE President Tomislav Nikolic received on Thursday the credentials of newly appointed Egyptian Ambassador to Belgrade Menha Mahrous Bakhoum. He used the opportunity to urge the Egypt's interim government to reconsider the country's decision to recognize Kosovo. President urges Egypt to reconsider its Kosovo decision Nikolic appealed to the Egypt’s temporary president and government to reconsider, in the spirit of traditional friendship and good relations between the two countries, the decision of the previous regime to recognize unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo that was made by former President Mohamed Morsi shortly before he was removed from office. “I am confident that the traditionally friendly ties between our two nations will be confirmed and further deepened and bilateral cooperation improved,” Nikolic said. He said that Serbia is ready to offer to Egypt all the necessary assistance and support it can to help the country tackle the complex challenges it is currently facing. Nikolic said that he believes that Ambassador Bakhoum will do everything she can to help improve cooperation in all areas. “Serbia supports the brotherly Egyptian people and respects its will. We sincerely hope that peace and stability will prevail in Egypt and that national reconciliation will be achieved by following the ‘roadmap’ adopted by the interim Egyptian government,” Nikolic said. Viewed from a historical perspective, Bakhoum said, Serbia and Egypt have excellent bilateral relations. She pointed out that Egypt is now facing considerable challenges at all levels, and foreign policy is no exception. The position of Egypt regarding Serbia will continue to be friendly and imply support for all Serbia’s efforts to establish lasting peace and prosperity in the Balkans, Bakhoum said. Speaking about the current situation in her country, Bakhoum stated that after the Arab Spring in 2011, Egypt got another a chance to establish democracy. We expect the Serbian government and people to strongly condemn recent terrorist attacks on civilians, military, police, and state and private institutions in Egypt, she said. Earlier Thursday, Nikolic received the credentials of the new ambassador of Lebanon, and during the day, he will receive the credentials of the newly appointed ambassadors of India and Mongolia in Belgrade.
