BELGRADE EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has stated that it was unacceptable for the media to issue information concerning investigations and announce arrests. This constitutes a violation of the presumption of innocence, the EU official said in a letter addressed to leader of the Democratic Party (DS) Dragan Djilas, this opposition party announced. Democrats: Fule replies to party leader's letter Fule underscored that such proceedings constitute disrespect for personal data protection, DS released on Thursday. In a release, DS said that Djilas previously sent a letter to Fule in which he pointed to the connections between certain media and judiciary bodies which were motivated by the fight among political opponents. The party noted that the EU commissioner said that the European Commission believes that it is unacceptable for details pertaining to corruption cases to be released and for arrests to be announced so as to influence the public. In response to the letter because of which Djilas addressed the EU commissioner in connection to abuse of media and pressures on institutions, Fule said that he was warned against serious allegations that certain tabloids are orchestrating media campaigns against the opposition and other parties and independent institutions over alleged corruption. Fule also said that the European Commission made this point clear in May, during the talks with representatives of the Justice Ministry and the ombudsman. The complaints concerning violation of the presumption of independence and disrespect of personal data protection will be included in the next Commission's report on progress in October, Fule noted as reported in the release.
