BELGRADE Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic said that in the EU accession talks, "up to 1,500 people will be involved on the Serbian negotiating side directly or indirectly." According to Tanjug, he also asserted that "the topic of Kosovo and Metohija will not be formulated as a condition." "1,500 to be involved in negotiations with EU" The talks on Serbia's EU membership will practically start with the arrival of EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule and his delegation in Belgrade, Mrkic said in an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti. “This (visit) will set up a negotiating framework. This is a process, the mandate will be drafted by the European Commission and then it will be forwarded to us,” he said. Mrkic expects that the topic of Kosovo and Metohija will be in Chapter 35 entitled “other issues”, and that it will not be formulated as a condition. “This item will include monitoring of the relations between Belgrade and Pristina. There will be no blackmail, as nothing of the kind would be accepted,” he said. When asked how Serbia's negotiating structure would look like, he said that considering the experience of certain members the negotiating process will include hundreds of participants and up to 1,500 in the long run. Mrkic said that the dialogue with the EU will involve representatives of civil society, (autonomous province) Vojvodina and national minorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also be included in the process, and the greatest role will be played by Serbia's Mission to the EU and the Ministry's EU integration sector, he said. Asked how the talks will develop and with whom from the EU the Serbian team will negotiate, the minister said that the entire process is run exclusively by the European Commission. “It is understandable that the talks are being conducted simultaneously, whenever that is possible or needed, with certain member states. But, the main job is being done on the Brussels-Belgrade line,” he said. Tanjug Vecernje novosti
