EBRD supports small and medium-sized enterprises in Serbia

BELGRADE The EBRD has launched a program of assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Serbia, it was announced this week. The European Union will finance the program, through a donation of EUR 3.5 million, and the EBRD Small Business Support team will be tasked with running it. EBRD supports small and medium-sized enterprises in Serbia In close cooperation with the Serbian Ministry of Finance and Economy, the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will support over 240 Serbian companies in the next three years. The assistance will be aimed at developing skills and innovations, attracting investments and providing future expertise, boosting competitiveness and productivity of the private sector in Serbia, the EBRD announced in a release. This program constitutes a continuation of the backing for SMEs that was started earlier, associated in Serbia with the Business Advisory Services (BAS) and the Enterprise Growth Program (EGP). Since 2001, the EBRD Small Business Support team has helped over 500 Serbian firms achieve growth and become more competitive, providing them with access to consulting services of international industrial experts and local advisors. Since then, the EU financed the EBRD Small Business Support team in Serbia with EUR 8 million. Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said that the Union is focused on the development of Serbia's private sector by offering backing to SMEs. Since 2001, the EU has granted around EUR 70 million from pre-accession funds for the development of SMEs in Serbia. EBRD Director for Serbia Matteo Patrone confirmed that results achieved by the EBRD Small Business Support team are excellent, as these companies are not only capable of increasing their turnover, but also creating jobs.
