BELGRADE Aleksandar Vucic announced on Monday that the Serbian parliament will pass a new labor law. According to the first deputy prime minister, this will not be done "with the aim of firing redundant workers more easily" - but in order "to improve the business environment and thus attract foreign investors." New labor law "not designed to sack people easily" Speaking at the conference entitled “Serbia Turns to Economy- Together Out of the Crisis”, Vucic underscored that the government will do its best to adjust the content of the bill to trade unions' requests, but voiced expectation that, nonetheless, it will even be criticized by those who know that it is necessary to make these changes. “We will meet our obligations, not obligations toward some companies and the EU, but toward our people. Our obligation is to improve the business climate as that is a chance to survive,” he said. This government has had courage to take much more dangerous and unpopular steps forward than it is needed for passing a potentially unpopular law, he noted. “We have to secure payments for 1.67 million pensioners, but in order to do that we have to create something,” Vucic said, noting that the goal of the Serbian government is to create productive jobs. Stressing that he is against any freeze in politics or economy, Vucic says he is very concerned, not only over the move that this government is about to make, but because of the mentality that makes a national consensus on any matter impossible. “I am not interested in any delays. To be completely frank, I knew that this government reshuffle would have taken a year or so, and for that reason I have told that July 27 is the deadline. We have no time to waste,” Vucic said.
