NEW YORK Ivan Mrkic said ahead of Friday's United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session on Kosovo that UNMIK must continue to play an important role in the area. The Serbian foreign minister told Tanjug that he met with UNMIK chief Farid Zarif in New York, who stressed the importance of the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina, adding that the deal has been welcomed by the entire international community. "Presence of UN mission in Kosovo important" The Serbian foreign minister also met with U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Rosemary DiCarlo, who congratulated the Serbian government on its achievements, saying this is something no one could have guessed ten months ago. "The United States welcomes this, as is evident in the frequency of high-level meetings between the two countries. DiCarlo expressed support for many of our positions," added Mrkic. The ambassador and I agreed that U.S.-Serbia relations are on the upswing, especially following the recent visit of Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic to the U.S, said Mrkic. I asked her for more concrete support from the U.S. regarding Serbia's demand that its citizens convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia be allowed to serve their sentences in Serbia, and she reacted well, noted the foreign minister.
