DUBLIN EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule says that the Belgrade-Pristina agreement has changed the Western Balkans’ perspective. He added that the agreement had brought the region closer to the EU. “Brussels agreement brought region closer to EU” “Serbia and Kosovo have reached a historic agreement,” Fule said at a conference on the Western Balkans’ EU integration in Dublin. He pointed out that the enlargement process would continue after Croatia’s accession on July 1. The EU enlargement commissioner recalled a similar conference held ten years ago in Thessaloniki when EU member states stated that the Western Balkan countries had a European perspective. “The EU had 15 members then and who could have imagined that the enlargement commissioner would be from a new member state ten years later,” noted Fule, a Czech official whose country joined the EU in 2004. He added that the countries of the region should now focus on strengthening the rule of law and overcoming the financial crisis but that they should not neglect the reconciliation process and establishment of good neighborly relations.
