BELGRADE, BERLIN Bundestag is to decide on June 27 whether Germany will back the opening of Serbia's accession talks with the EU, Tanjug has learned at the German parliament. The Bundestag's decision, which is binding on the government in Berlin, will depend, among other things, on the implementation of the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina. Bundestag to decide on Serbia’s EU talks date on June 27 The European Council will make a decision on a date for the start of the talks at a session on June 27-28, and the decision requires consensus of the EU member states. Gunther Krichbaum, a member of the ruling CDU/CSU coalition in Germany and the head of the Bundestag delegation that paid a visit to Belgrade on April 10-11 together with French MPs, said on the occasion that the decision of the German parliament will largely depend on the European Commission's report including the assessment of the progress made in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci signed the agreement on the principles of the normalization of relations on April 19 in Brussels. Three days later, the European Commission submitted a progress report in which is recommends that talks with Serbia start. However, the two sides still have not agreed on how to implement the agreement and the next Dacic-Thaci meeting is scheduled to take place in Brussels on May 21. Andreas Schockenhoff, high representative of the ruling German party headed by Chancellor Angela Merkel, presented last September seven demands on which, as he put it, Berlin's decision will depend. “Legally binding normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is the key one,” he explained. “Before the start of the accession talks with the EU, the two sides need to come to an agreement in written form, and by the end of the talks the agreement should be fully implemented,” Schockenhoff told a press conference in Belgrade. “So, an agreement before the start of the EU talks, and the realization of the deal by the end of the talks,” Schockenhoff said.
