BELGRADE Milan Pajevic said on Monday he expects that if Serbia gets a date for EU accession talks, it will begin the talks in September. Pajevic heads the Serbian Government Office for EU Integration. "If Serbia gets EU date negotiations start in September" "Our preparations for the talks started a long time ago, and we intend to complete them by the end of July. The length of the accession talks will depend on our dedication to the process, that is how organized, efficient and capable we are in adopting regulations and implementing them in practice, harmonizing our system with the European," Pajevic told the Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. Pajevic recalled Croatia's talks lasted around six years, "which is the result we should strive for." Asked what Brussels means when it says the EU does not want a new Bulgaria or Romania in its ranks, Pajevic says in the future the EU will only accept new members which are fully ready. "This means oversight of the adoption and especially implementation of new regulations, as well as measures for improving the work of institutions, will be much stricter than before. From the start, the focus will on chapters 23 and 24, which cover judiciary reform, fundamental rights and freedoms, the fight against corruption and crime, security," he said. Other areas such as agriculture, energy, environmental protection, and a series of economic and financial topics will also require a lot of effort, Pajevic added.
