BELGRADE Suzana Grubjesic says a decision giving Serbia a date for the start of EU accession talks should be made at a summit of EU heads of state or government. It will take place on June 27 or 28 in Brussels, said the deputy PM in charge of EU integration. "EU decision to be known in late June" "We will find out at the summit of heads of state or government on June 27 or 28 whether we will get the date in June or not," Grubjesic told Belgrade-based Pink TV. The deputy prime minister also said that this is when a date for the start of the membership talks should be set, while the negotiations itself might start in three to six months, or in June next year. "It is important that we have time indication, so that our administration and all capacities can prepare for the start of the negotiations, in order to create a negotiating framework, form a negotiating team and open the first most difficult chapters 23 and 24 relating to the judiciary and security," Grubjesic noted. Asked when is the earliest Serbia can become an EU member, she said that Croatia's example shows that the talks lasted for five years, while the ratification lasted for two years, which means in seven years. She pointed out it has been assessed that Serbia has made a huge step forward and that it has sped up its reforms in all fields monitored by the European Commission. The fields include the rule of law, judicial reform, the fight against corruption, improvement of business environment, reforms in the economy, in human, minority and LGBT rights, while media laws are in preparation, Grubjesic said. A working group for drafting an action plan for the implementation of the Belgrade-Pristina agreement will be formed in the near future, she added. "This is what we will focus on now," Grubjesic stated, adding that now is the time to "put internal reforms first." The deputy prime minister for EU integration underlined that Serbia will now continue the dialogue with Pristina, and that the vital issues of the Serbs' return to Kosovo and of their property, as well as the property of Serbia, are the next to be discussed. An agreement on the issue of telecommunications and energy should also be reached, she concluded. (Beta, file) Tanjug Pink TV
