NOVI SAD Vojvodina Assembly President Istvan Pastor said on Monday that he will call early provincial elections if the necessary legal prerequisites for this are met. He said that his hands are tied completely in this respect and a decision depends solely on whether relevant legal procedures will be honored or not. Elections in Vojvodina - if legal prerequisites are met Pastor told a press conference that he can only say with regret that the idea of the autonomy of Vojvodina has recently become a political training ground, adding that “never before has it been slapped in the face so hard." “I urged on Thursday that the declaration on the protection of the constitutional and legal rights of Vojvodina is not discussed at the first meeting of the provincial parliament, in order to avoid further tensions, but all the effort was in vain since the Vojvodina government does not want to change its position,” Pastor said. Given that the ruling majority, headed by the Democratic Party (DS), is by the stand that the declaration should be put on the agenda of the Vojvodina assembly's next session, there remains nothing else for us to do but to hold a session of the Committee on Issues of Constitutional and Legal Status of the Province to discuss the declaration draft and consider relevant comments before the session of the Assembly is held,he said. Pastor has already announced that he would convene a meeting of the party whips to discuss the impending parliamentary session and declaration for Tuesday. (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
