KOSOVSKA MITROVICA Serbia will always insist on the safety of its people in Kosovo above everything else, regardless of whether Belgrade and Pristina resume their talks. This is according to Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo Director Aleksandar Vulin. “Serbia will always insist on safety of Kosovo Serbs” While visiting the multiethnic village of Suvi Do near Kosovska Mitrovica, which is home to 78 families, Vulin said the main problems of its residents were safety, constant thefts and violence. He noted this was the result of the utter indifference exhibited by members of the Kosovo police and the international community and the lack of political will to tackle the problems. "The Serbian state is here to help and we will do everything in our power to make life possible, but what is needed is firm resolve from the international community to deal with the security issues," said Vulin. Vulin pointed out Albanians were attempting to settle in areas which used to be populated by Serbs and thus change the ethnic structure of majority Serb villages. “Serbia and Serbs are not opposed to all Albanians who were displaced during the conflict returning to their homes but cannot accept Pristina's plan to change the ethnic structure of villages and move Albanians into areas where they never lived,” said the Office for Kosovo director. He said that in the municipality of Zvecan, where Serbs are an overwhelming majority, four Albanian families had gotten building permits recently, and another eight applications were under consideration. Vulin said he had proposed forming a commission made up of representatives of UNMIK, UNHCR, the local administration, the Albanian community, and village representatives, which would determine who lived in a village prior to the conflict and who could return there. Vulin visited Suvi Do in the company of Zemun municipal council member Milosav Stamenov and Agrimax Director Goran Saratlic, who brought corn seed for some 250 hectares of land in the village. They visited the home of Radovan Apostolovic, who has three daughters and no source of income after his tractor was stolen, leaving him unable to farm his land. Aleksandar Vulin (Beta, file) Tanjug
