Serbia must reject Brussels’ offer, DSS leader says

BELGRADE Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica said on Saturday that the West’s only goal is to legalize Kosovo’s independence. He said that the Serbian government had an opportunity to a lot for Serbia by rejecting a paper that had been offered in Brussels, adding that the best way to do it was to call a parliament session. Serbia now has a good opportunity to reject the EU’s proposal with convincing arguments that Brussels solely advocates Kosovo’s independence. The EU would do the biggest favor to Serbia if it did not give us a date (for the beginning of the EU accession talks) and this is the road that will lead us toward the recovery of the Serbian statehood,” Kostunica stressed. He said at a debate dubbed “This is not a NATO country” marking the anniversary of NATO bombing that the EU was determined to take away a part of Serbia’s territory and that Serbia and the Serbian people were facing great and difficult challenges that demanded composure of everyone in Serbia in order to defend the country, its identity and history. The DSS leader underscored that the “Euro-Atlantic project of creating independent Kosovo started with NATO attack on Serbia”, noting that the EU now requested normalization of relations with Kosovo from Serbia “which means to establish relations between two countries”. “The EU has no other goal than to take Kosovo away from Serbia and create an independent state under NATO control and it is offering Serbia nothing in return,” he said and pointed out that a date for the start of the EU accession talks “as a reward for Serbia’s humiliation” did not mean anything.
