BELGRADE Germany has not yet made a final decision whether to vote for or against granting Serbia a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations in June. This is according to Andreas Schokenhoff who led a delegation of the German Bundestag during a visit to Belgrade. “Germany yet to decide on Serbia’s EU talks date” “The Bundestag will discuss the matter only after the European Commission's progress report is ready, which means after April 16, so the following days and weeks are crucial,” he said. Schokenhoff stressed that without being given the green light by the Bundestag, Chancellor Angela Merkel could not vote for granting the date at the European Council meeting. “Even if Serbia does not get the date in June, chances will open up for the country when it meets the necessary recommendations,” he stressed. “If it this does not happen in June, I believe that Serbia may still be put on the European Council's agenda before a year passes,” Schokenhoff told daily Vecernje novosti. “We know that the evaluation of Serbia's efforts in the dialogue with Kosovo also greatly depends on the behavior of Pristina and we are therefore exerting influence on them and have certain expectations from them,” said Schokenhoff. “This means that we cannot hold it against Serbia if it is willing to compromise while Kosovo is not,” he added. He advised the Serbian leadership to demonstrate maximum flexibility and willingness to reach a compromise with Pristina regarding powers to be enjoyed by an association of Serb municipalities in Kosovo. Schokenhoff said that the German delegation was leaving Belgrade with the impression that there was an honest desire to reach an agreement and expressed hope that it would soon be reached.
