“Albanians in south do not have U.S., EU’s support”

An initiative of Albanians in southern Serbia should not jeopardize negotiations between Belgrade and Priština, analyst Dušan Janjić told B92.

BELGRADE An initiative of Albanians in southern Serbia should not jeopardize negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, analyst Dusan Janjic told B92. He points out that Albanians from the Presevo Valley came up with requests to get the same status as Serbs in northern Kosovo before but that they did not have the support of the international community, just like they do not have it now. “Albanians in south do not have U.S., EU’s support” “It will not directly improve or jeopardize Pristina or Belgrade's negotiating position, however, the situation of Presevo and Bujanovac Albanians is currently slightly worse than for example before November 28. Simply, they will not get a direct support from Brussels and Washington bearing in mind that that they have a steadfast position against anything that looks like unification of all Albanians in the region. And this kind of initiative could be interpreted even in Washington as a preparation for secession from Serbia,” Janjic explained. Coordination Body for Southern Serbia Chairman Zoran Stankovic said on Saturday night commenting on the Presevo Valley Albanians' initiative that Albanians needed to stop drawing parallels between them and northern Kosovo. “Albanians are equal citizens of this country – drawing of parallels needs to stop sometime because it is obvious that new requests of Albanian leaders from southern Serbia can be heard whenever the issue of northern Kosovo opens,” he said. A session of the assembly of Albanian municipal councilors from Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja was held in Presevo on Saturday. A session of the assembly of Albanian municipal councilors from Preševo, Bujanovac and Medveđa was held in Preševo on Saturday.

The Albanian councilors reiterated their request that they should have the same political and institutional position as northern Kosovo Serbs.
