A left-wing coalition led by Pier Luigi Bersani has won the most votes in elections for the lower house of the Italian parliament.

ROME A left-wing coalition led by Pier Luigi Bersani has won the most votes in elections for the lower house of the Italian parliament. Based on 99.9 percent of the votes counted, the coalition won 29.55 percent of the vote, while the right-wing coalition of Silvio Berlusconi won 29.18 percent. Italy: Left-wing coalition wins with narrow margin In the upper house of parliament, the Senate, the left will have 97 seats with 31.63 percent of the vote. However, the right wing will have 110 seats - because of the specific voting system for the Senate where the seats are awarded based on the number of votes won by regions - although they had less support in the election (30.71 percent). In the race for the House of Representatives, according to preliminary results, comedian Beppe Grillo and his party came in third.
