BELGRADE Inspectors started checking grocery stores on Thursday to see whether milk products with increased levels of aflatoxin have been taken off shelves. The Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday released a list of 39 milk products that contained illegal amounts of aflatoxin M1. Inspectors check stores in search of contaminated milk Agriculture Ministry’s State Secretary Dejan Krnjajic told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) that a certain amount of corn in cattle feed was contaminated with aflatoxin but stressed that the amount was significantly smaller than 75 percent of the total corn reserve in Serbia as some media had reported. Faculty of Agriculture Professor Mihajlo Ostojic has said that the people’s health is in danger and that the state should do everything to replace the contaminated cattle feed with new one. “It takes three to four days to change the cattle’s diet and eliminate the presence of aflatoxin in milk,” he explained. He added that a media campaign should be launched so the public would know which milk products not to buy, adding that the Agriculture’s Ministry release was not enough. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Professor Radmila Resanovic says that even the permitted amount of aflatoxin in milk, which is 0.05 micrograms per liter in Serbia, represented a health risk. She added that meat and eggs should also be inspected in order to determine whether they contain aflatoxin as well. (Tanjug) Tanjug
