BELGRADE The MP club of the coalition led by the opposition Democratic Party (DS) will lose another member, after Dusan Petrovic announced that he was leaving. The former minister of agriculture was expelled from the DS earlier this month for failing to toe the line on the party's new, controversial policy of forcing former cabinet ministers from its ranks to resign as MPs. Democrat-led parliament group continues to shrink But instead of doing that, the former vice-president of the party resigned from the DS club in parliament, and said he would form his own. The DS-led group, which has 67 members when the new parliament was formed after the May elections last year, at this point has 51 MPs - but that number includes Petrovic and Vuk Jeremic, and could go as low as 40-45. Two more DS MPs - Bosko Ristic and Sanja Cekovic - announced that they would join the new group. There has been speculation that at least three other MPs would also join them. Another addition to the new MP club could be UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic - another former minister that the party, which has been led since last fall by Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, decided to expel from its ranks. Shortly after the parliament was formed last summer the DS group was abandoned by five MPs from the League of Social-Democrats of Vojvodina, and another nine from the ranks of Rasim Ljajic's SDPS, the latter after they joined the new ruling coalition. After that, two more left - Nenad Kitanovic to join the URS party, and Olgica Batic, who became a new member of the SPO-DHSS group. According to the Belgrade media, the new group about to be formed by Petrovic will be joined by Democrats Nebojsa Zelenovic, Milovan Markovic and Miodrag Djidic, while some reports suggest that there are others dissatisfied with the new party leadership. In reaction to all this, DS group chief Borislav Stefanovic was on Wednesday quoted as saying that he "wished a safe journey" to all fellow Democrat members of parliament who wished to join Petrovic's "political option".
