NEW YORK A session of the UN Security Council on the situation on Kosovo that was supposed to be held on Friday will be postponed for March, Tanjug has learnt. A new date has not been set yet and the decision will be made by the Russian delegation, that will take over the presidency, in consultations with other members of the Security Council. UN Security Council postpones session on Kosovo UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pointed out in his regular three-month report that a “significant step forward” had been made thanks to taking the Belgrade-Pristina to a political level. However, he called on the Kosovo authorities to decisively react to intolerance such as incidents during the celebration of Orthodox Christmas. “I congratulate leaders of both sides for embarking on this challenging but important political process aimed at solving the most important issues that halt progress in their relations,” Ban said in the report covering the period from October 16, 2012 until January 15, 2013. He stressed that even though there were still many difficult issues, the reopening of the negotiations represented a “strong signal that both sides advocate a peaceful dialogue and solving issues of the past conflict”. The UN secretary general warned that certain events “point to both continuation of the fragile situation and to a chance to continue stabilization provided that there is political leadership and good will”. Commenting on the situation in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, Ban stressed that “coordinated action and attention are necessary in order to solve all difficult issues in good faith and avoid further tensions”. The UN head added that aside from the political process, it was also necessary to make efforts to improve reconciliation and increase trust among communities in Kosovo. (Beta/AP, file) Tanjug
