BELGRADE Serbia's Statehood Day, February 15, will be marked with a series of events. Celebrations began with a gun salute at the Belgrade Fortress on Thursday. Serbia marks its Statehood Day and Armed Forces Day on the same day when it celebrates the Orthodox holiday of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Statehood Day celebrations begin in Serbia Statehood Day commemorates both the First Serbian Uprising against the occupying Ottoman Turks in 1804, and the adoption of the First Serbian Constitution in 1835. Both historical events, significant for the renewal of the Serbian state, took place on February 15. In view of the national holiday, Serbian primary and secondary schools will organize thematic activities dedicated to distinguished figures and milestones in the national history, particularly the First Serbian Uprising and the Constitution of 1835. The Days of Open Museums will be held from February 15-17, during which citizens will have an opportunity to visit museums across Serbia free of charge, the statement adds. On Friday, the Serbian parliament will hold a ceremonial session that will be addressed by Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic will address the present.
