BELGRADE Local authorities in Kraljevo, Kursumlija and Prijepolje have announced that they will discuss a draft declaration against GMOs at their upcoming sessions. The declaration, which was proposed by the Greens of Serbia party, envisages a possibility for the local self-governments to declare their municipalities “GMO free territories”. Serbian municipalities against GMOs Kraljevo town assembly Speaker Sreten Jovanovic told Beta news agency that he expected the Greens of Serbia party's proposal to be on the agenda of the local parliament's next session. “Bearing in mind that the local self-government in Cacak was the first to make a decision to adopt the proposal, I have a meeting with the town representatives and I expect the issue to be on the agenda at the next session of the Kraljevo town assembly,” Jovanovic stressed. Kraljevo-based Ibar Ecology Movement President Miroslav Pavlovic has said that the movement is against the growth and use of the genetically modified organisms. “We are an agricultural country and we have an opportunity to grow healthy organic food so I do not see a reason to grow GMOs here at all. The only ones who would benefit from this are large corporations that are hard to fight against,” he underscored. Movement for Kraljevo has already submitted a proposal for the ban of the GMOs to the local self-government modeled after Cacak’s proposal that envisages a ban of the GMOs in the town’s territory. Kursumlija municipal councilors will debate the Greens of Serbia's proposal at their next session, Kursumlija municipal agriculture expert Jovica Djinovic told Beta. Kursumlija’s Department of Agriculture has no information that anyone grows and produces genetically modified organisms and food in the municipality. “Farmers here solely grow organic food and use all advantages of an unpolluted environment,” Djinovic underscored. The Greens of Serbia’s proposal has arrived to the Prijepolje municipal assembly. “The draft declaration will be included in the procedure for the preparation of the municipal assembly’s sessions,” Prijepolje Mayor Vukosav Tomasevic told Beta. He could not say when exactly the draft would be on the agenda due to procedural reasons but pointed out that he supported the document. “I will do my best that the draft declaration is on the agenda of the Prijepolje municipal assembly as soon as possible,” Tomasevic noted. The Greens of Serbia’s draft declaration is aimed at giving priority to a controlled, organic and traditional production of plants, crops and animals based on traditional selection and cultivation and at protecting the population’s health from “unpredictable consequences of the GMOs presence in food”.
