BELGRADE Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert believes that the EU will set a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations with Serbia in June. He said that a decline in the Serbian citizens’ support for the country’s EU accession was, among other things, a result of impatience and disappointment. EU rep expects Serbia to get EU talks date in June “We have to keep working like we have so far, to explain citizens our intentions that the EU’s goal is that Serbia becomes a member. I believe that the opinion will be positive and that Serbia will fulfill the well-known criteria in June, when it will be decided on the beginning of the negotiations,” Degert stressed. He pointed to British Ambassador to Serbia Michael Davenport’s statement that Great Britain strongly supported Serbia’s efforts aimed at getting a date for the start of the EU accession negotiations. “We need to say that there are no new conditions. Everything that is requested from Serbia is requested from other member sates, well-known things that have always been present,” Degert stressed and added that “progress is made constantly in the European process”. According to him, the support for the EU accession in Serbia is a result of the Hague Tribunal’s acquittal of Croat Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac and the postponement of the EU’s decision to grant Serbia a date for the beginning of the accession talks. “Impatience and disappointment have generated into numbers, just like the economic crisis in the EU and Serbia,” the head of the EU delegation to Serbia concluded.
