BELGRADE According to reports Swedish Migration and Asylum Policy Minister Tobias Billstrom insists that visas be introduced for citizens of Western Balkan countries. He has already sent a request to governments of other 26 EU member states, FoNet has reported. "Swedish minister advocates reintroduction of visas" According to Swedish daily Syd Svenskan, Sweden will step up its immigration policy when it comes to asylum seekers so only those who really needed help could get it. According to Billstrom, it is expected that 54,000 people will apply for asylum in Sweden this year. 15,000 of them are expected to come from Syria and housing will represent the biggest problem. Billstrom stressed that it was unacceptable that large numbers of people from Serbia and countries in the region unfoundedly sought asylum in Sweden, taking up much of the housing that other people desperately needed. “They state poverty and inability to find work as the reason for their arrival but this has never been an acceptable reason for the granting of the asylum. Sweden is spending a lot of money on people who have already gotten negative response to their asylum applications but they still have not left the country. This is why we need to change the existing and pass new laws that will be much more fair and just to all people who seek asylum,” the Swedish minister concluded. (Beta/AP, file) FoNet Blic
