BELGRADE The Democratic Party (DS) has accused the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of persecuting Democrats and their leader Dragan Djilas. The DS also requested from the SNS to call early parliamentary elections. Democrats accuse Progressives of “persecution” The Democrats said in a release that the SNS was, with a help of a pro-regime media, preparing for a “lynch of opposition leaders”. They called on the SNS to call the early elections and noted that the DS was ready for them. “The SNS as a ruling party of the government is taking Serbia, step by step, into the 90s when ruling parties had the power to rule the destiny of the people who live in this country and decide on lives of their political opponents and their families,” reads the release. The DS stressed that “journalists have never feared Dragan Djilas” but that they feared “now Progressives and former Radicals” whose “infamous information law allowed journalists to be sued on a daily basis and convicted within 24 hours”. “Djilas filed a lawsuit against (Belgrade-based tabloid) Kurir when a witch-hunt against him became so obvious that there was no other choice. The progressives and their leader obviously believe that nobody from the DS dares react to any attacks and that we need to take unfounded tarnishing of the new pro-regime media,” it is pointed out in the release. The DS stressed that the party respected the energy and efforts of SNS leader and First Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic. “We have not criticized combat against crime and corruption because we believe that the combat is important. However, after six months, instead of unbiased investigations conducted against everybody who are involved in affairs, the SNS is offering new theories about the political-tycoon mafia, that, surprise, surprise, consists of DS members and tycoons that the Progressives do not like,” the DS noted in the statement. The DS said that the SNS should see what the prime minister, ministers and ruling parties had done before it blamed the DS and Djilas for everything that was not right in the country. The Democrats explained that early elections should be called only if the government was not capable of running the country. The DS also called on the SNS to admit that, aside from Vucic, they did not have anything to offer to Serbia. “Admit you are not capable of controlling (Finance and Economy Minister) Mladjan Dinkic and (PM) Ivica Dacic and call the elections. Now. We are ready,” the Democrats concluded. Tanjug
