Two regional trains collided in Vienna, Austria, on Monday morning, leaving 41 people injured - five seriously, of which two critically.

The two trains traveling on the S45 route collided head-on this morning.

They were traveling between Penzing and Westbahnhof stations, according to reports.

Both trains were full of passengers, officials said. The cause of the accident is still being investigated, but human error "is not being ruled out".

Ambulances and firefighters arrived at the accident site with more manpower. Helicopters were sent to evacuate those who suffered serious injuries.

According to the Austrian media, there were reports last week that the route between Penzing and Westbahnhof was "overburdened with too much traffic".
