BELGRADE Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica has stated that the “EU has no alternative“ policy was defeated at last year's election. He noted that it would be necessary to define a new policy in 2013 in accordance with Serbia's state and national interests. DSS leader: End of “EU has no alternative” policy Kostunica told Tanjug that had the previous government stayed in power, the Democratic Party (DS) policy would have continued, which meant fulfillment of Brussels’ requests when it came to the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. According to him, “Kosovo would have slipped into independence that way”. “This has been stopped and you can feel the change in the public. No one is mentioning this ‘EU has no alternative’ dogma anymore because this devastating course has been stopped,” the DSS leader noted. According to him, Serbia needs to go in a new direction by “getting out of the inferior position in the EU integration” and “by not being the EU’s satellite”. “We need to turn to our own resources and develop a state-building policy. The foundation of the state-building policy, at least when it comes to the EU and political and military alliances, is to clearly define that Serbia should politically neutral and that should not be a member of the EU or any other alliance and that it should cooperate with all countries in accordance with its interests, not to its detriment,” Kostunica explained. “If a new policy is not formulated, if the EU integration continues one way or the other, then Serbia’s breakup will continue because EU integration leads to disintegration of Serbia, its weakening, it will question Serbia, not just territorially but also in economical, identity and every other sense,” he added. According to the DSS leader, the EU is “exhausted and it has proven to be a paper tiger, which is confirmed by its officials, among whom there is a growing number of EU skeptics”.
