The protesters carried union flags and a banner saying “Police Union of Serbia always with people”. Police Union of Serbia President Veljko Mijailovic told reporters that the main reason the Union organized the protest were mild sentences for attackers of police officers. He said that their main request was to introduce stiffer sentences for such perpetrators. Mijailovic stressed that state officials often said that an attack on the police was an attack on the state but that they did very little to prevent the attacks. The Union also believes that the next police director needs to be a professional and that there should be no political agreements in the selection process. Mijailovic added that the police director would have to take care of the rights of all police officers. He noted that the Police Union of Serbia had requested to be a part of a commission for the election of the new police director as an observer but that the request had been rejected. (Beta) Tanjug
