BELGRADE Serbian Interior Ministry State Secretary Vladimir Bozovic says corruption has reached such a high level in Serbia that it poses a threat to national security. He stressed that an institutionalized and comprehensive combat against corruption was therefore necessary. Corruption "threat to national security", official warns “Corruption in our country has reached such a high level that we can say with certainty that it is a threat to national security,” Bozovic said at a meeting dedicated to the beginning of a project dubbed “Development of strategic partnership and improvement of horizontal communication in MUP”. He noted that the Serbian government was working on a strategy for combat against corruption and organized crime and that Serbian police (MUP) had an active role in it. The two-year project is worth EUR 1.5mn and it is financed from EU pre-accession funds. Great Britain is a partner in the project and its police officials and experts will cooperate with their Serbian colleagues. The project is aimed at better strategic planning in MUP, modernization, improved analyses, control and efficiency assessments. “Such projects contribute to further modernization and reforms in MUP and I am sure that they will also help the Serbian government in its decisive combat against corruption and organized crime in the future period,” Bozovic stressed. According to Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert and British Ambassador to Serbia Michael Davenport, efficient police and similar projects will help speed up Serbia’s EU integration process. Degert and Davenport said, commenting on EU foreign ministers’ decision to set a date for the beginning of Serbia’s EU accession talks in the spring if the country fulfills all the necessary conditions, that such position was a confirmation of Serbia’s efforts and an encouragement to continue with reforms and dialogue with Pristina.
