BELGRADE Serbia’s Regional Development Minister Verica Kalanovic has stated that the Constitution needs to be changed in order to secure decentralization in the country. She said at the 40th Assembly of the Conference of Towns and Municipalities that the decentralization was a necessity and a process that Serbia needed to go through on the EU pathway. Constitution must be changed, minister says “The Serbian government’s aim is the country’s full-fledged membership in the EU and this is a goal that needs to be achieved for our own sake because it is important that Serbia is organized and economically stable just like other EU member states,” Kalanovic noted. She added that Serbia’s EU pathway was not easy but difficult and that the government was determined to achieve the goal. The minister assessed that Tuesday’s message from the EU was an encouragement for Serbia and added that she was convinced that Serbia would join the Union. She stressed that it was important in order to reach European standards in Serbia that “every region, municipality, city and all citizens in Serbia need to have”. Kalanovic noted that citizens in all countries were wary of the EU integration process and that Serbia was no exception, adding that referendums in certain EU member states had shown that citizens were not united in their stance on the EU accession. “But not a single country has left the EU,” she stressed.
