BELGRADE Serbia’s Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic has stated that he is not surprised by Liberal Democratic Party’s request for him to step down. He stressed, however, that the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would decide whether he should resign or not. SNS will decide on resignation, minister says Selakovic pointed out that he was ready to suffer the consequences if he did something wrong and added that he would always stand by his people and his students. “As far as reactions of (LDP leader) Cedomir Jovanovic and LDP are concerned, I did not expect a different reaction. I expect my SNS, as I was chosen for the post of justice minister in the Serbian government as its representative, to make the decision after party leader Aleksandar Vucic returns from the U.S. if it is not satisfied with my actions and the way I run the ministry,” the minister told a press conference. He said he respected his political opponents and a fact that anybody could choose a way to conduct their political fight and represent ideas. “Personally, it seems to me that it bothers somebody that I was with my students and my people. I have said several times and I will repeat now that I think that Hague Tribunal’s verdicts to (Croat Generals Ante) Gotovina and (Mladen) Markac and (former commander of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army Ramush) Haradinaj are a disgrace for the international law and a true shame for all those who voted for such verdicts,” the minister underscored. He added that “unlike some, there is no suspicious capital worth millions” behind him and that he did not “take part in criminal privatizations that brought grief to Serbia and its people”. “I move freely around my city and my country, I take the city transportation and unlike some, who are thanks to their behavior more against their people and the state than for them, I have always stood by my people and my students and I always will,” Selakovic pointed out. The LDP requested Selakovic’s resignation due to his participation in a protest of university students against the Hague Tribunal’s rulings. LDP MP Zoran Ostojic said in parliament on Thursday that the party would launch an initiative to dismiss the justice minister and expressed hope that the Democratic Party (DS), League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) and other opposition parties would join the LDP.
