City Assembly President Aleksandar Antic addressed reporters at the scene last night to say it was still early to assess the damage, but pledged the city's support in repairing it. Unofficially, the fire was caused by faulty wiring, reportedly from damp conditions in the attic caused when ice broke through the roof last winter. Acting director of the theater, Dejan Savic, also spoke to reporters to say that the damage done by the blaze was "not huge", but that the main stage, the Big Scene, would be closed for a time, while the Small Scene would function normally. Savic told Tanjug that the cause of the fire was "likely the electrical wiring". The National Theater in Belgrade recently marked its anniversary. This national institution was founded in 1868.
