BRUSSELS The European Parliament (EP) has called on the European Council give Serbia a date for the beginning of the EU talks as soon as possible. The EP added, however, that Serbia needed to continue reforms and improve relations with its neighbors. European Parliament urges EU talks date for Serbia The EP called on the European Council to grant Serbia the EU talks date in a draft resolution that will be presented to MEPs on Monday. “The EP welcomes commitment of the new Serbian government to European integrations and stresses a need for further implementation of reforms,” reads the draft resolution. The draft resolution represents an annual EP report on Serbia which will be presented to MEP by EP Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin. The resolution commends the Belgrade authorities’ efforts in combat against corruption and fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria. “The European Council is urged to set a date for the beginning of the negotiations for Serbia as soon as possible on conditions that all key criteria are met and reforms are continued,” reads the document. The draft also expresses concern over changes to the Law on the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) that “undermines the independence of the institution and represents a step back when it comes to the Copenhagen criteria”. The EP also condemned the decision to ban this year’s gay Pride Parade and called the Serbian authorities to allow all minorities to be equally represented in state bodies. The EP commended the opening of the political dialogue with Pristina and cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic’s visit to Sarajevo and official support to Bosnia-Herzegovina’s sovereignty and integrity. “We stress that officials should not deny the existence of serious violations of human rights and war crimes in the 90s,” the EP added. After a discussion in the Foreign Policy Committee, the resolution will be adopted by MEPs.
