BELGRADE An election assembly of the Democratic Party (DS) started on Sunday in Belgrade and the party will choose new leadership and adopt several new documents. There are only two candidates for the DS leader – Dragan Djilas and Branimir Kuzmanovic. Democrats to elect new party leader Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic said that the DS was the only political factor capable of transforming the society but that it needed a reform itself, which had to be brave. "If the DS continues to develop discussion within itself and the capability to change, only then will it have the legitimacy to seize power at the next election. If it does not have that strength, it will pay the price, as it is paying now," Tadic stated. He told candidates for party leader Djilas and Kuzmanovic they faced difficult days and were about to assume great responsibility for the future of the party, Serbia and region and for peace and stability. Tadic's entrance into the meeting room was accompanied by a loud applause and chants of his name. The delegates also adopted a new DS Statute on Sunday. The party will today choose the fourth president since 1990. It is expected that Djilas will get the majority of the votes. The early party elections followed after the DS lost the parliamentary and presidential elections in May. Tadic will from now on be an honorary president. Candidates for seven deputy leaders are Natasa Vuckovic, Jovan Markovic, Vesna Martinovic, Dejan Nikolic, Bojan Pajtic, Miodrag Rakic and Goran Ciric. Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadić said that the DS was the only political factor capable of transforming the society but that it needed a reform itself, which had to be brave.

"If the DS continues to develop discussion within itself and the capability to change, only then will it have the legitimacy to seize power at the next election. If it does not have that strength, it will pay the price, as it is paying now," Tadić stated.

He told candidates for party leader Đilas and Kuzmanović they faced difficult days and were about to assume great responsibility for the future of the party, Serbia and region and for peace and stability.

Tadić's entrance into the meeting room was accompanied by a loud applause and chants of his name.

The delegates also adopted a new DS Statute on Sunday.

The party will today choose the fourth president since 1990. It is expected that Đilas will get the majority of the votes.

The early party elections followed after the DS lost the parliamentary and presidential elections in May.

Tadić will from now on be an honorary president.

Candidates for seven deputy leaders are Nataša Vučković, Jovan Marković, Vesna Martinović, Dejan Nikolić, Bojan Pajtić, Miodrag Rakić and Goran Ćirić.
Dragoljub Mićunović is a candidate for the DS’ Political Council president.
