BRUSSELS, BERLIN, JERUSALEM EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued statements on Friday saying that Israel has "a right to defend itself". “The rocket attacks by Hamas and other factions in Gaza, which began this current crisis are totally unacceptable for any government and must stop,” Ashton was quoted as saying by Reuters, and adding: EU, Merkel say Israel has right to "defend itself" “Israel has the right to protect its population from these kind of attacks. I urge Israel to ensure that its response is proportionate." Ashton also stated that she had spoken "with leaders in the region, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the office of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi", as to how best to de-escalate the situation. A German government spokesman said on Friday that Merkel is "very worried" about an escalation of violence in the Middle East and calls on Hamas to immediately stop shooting rockets from Gaza into Israel." "Hamas in Gaza is responsible for the outbreak of violence," spokesman Georg Streiter told a news conference, and added that Merkel called on the Egyptian government to use its influence on Hamas "to limit the violence and bring it to an end." Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post reported on its website that two rockets fired from Gaza landed in areas close to Jerusalem, and two more near Tel Aviv. No injuries or damage was reported. The more southern towns of Beersheva, Ashdod, and Ashkelon also came under repeated rocket attack, with residents reporting damage to their homes. Israel is saying that nearly 350 rockets landed in its territory since it launched the operation in Gaza on Wednesday. Three Israelis were reported dead in an attack on Thursday. The Israeli military, which is calling up reservists, also announced that it attacked some some 500 "terror targets" in Gaza. Palestinian sources in that territory said that 20 people had been killed as a consequence.
