THESSALONIKI Dozens of protesters broke into a conference on Greek-German trade in Thessaloniki on Thursday and threw coffee at German Consul Wolfgang Hoelsche-Obermaier. The anti-austerity protesters, mostly municipal workers, demonstrated against the presence of a German government official. In a chaotic scene on Thursday, riot police chased protesters through the conference center complex from building to building. There were no immediate reports of arrests, according to AP. Left-wing German lawmaker Annette Groth joined the protesters outside the conference center, where clashes with riot police also occurred. "I have also been unemployed," she told the crowd. "It is not you who should pay the price for this crisis but the rich." Media reported on Wednesday that Hoelsche-Obermaier said that three Greek municipal staffers were required to complete tasks accomplished by a single German. On Thursday, he denied he said this and claimed that it had been a “misunderstanding" over his comments. The Greek Parliament last week passed a new austerity package that bailout creditors had demanded in exchange for paying out more rescue loans.
