UNSC holds emergency session on Gaza attacks

The UN Security Council held a late night emergency meeting Wednesday on escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinian territory of Gaza.

NEW YORK The UN Security Council held a late night emergency meeting Wednesday on escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinian territory of Gaza. However, no concrete decision was made at the session. UNSC holds emergency session on Gaza attacks AP has reported that the meeting was held at a request of Egyptian Ambassador Mootaz Khalil. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released statements saying he had spoken to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi about "the worrisome escalation of violence in southern Israel and Gaza and the need to prevent any further deterioration." The Israeli government approved mobilization of reserve units in order to expand the operation in the Gaza Strip after Hamas' military leader Ahmed al-Jabari had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. A policy of targeted killings has been renewed with al-Jabari’s death. The Egyptian president recalled his ambassador from Tel Aviv after al-Jabari had been killed. Morsi also instructed the Foreign Ministry to lodge a protest with the Israeli ambassador in Cairo and requested the Arab League to call an emergency meeting. AP has reported that the meeting was held at a request of Egyptian Ambassador Mootaz Khalil.
