MOSCOW The building of the South Stream gas pipeline will start on Dec. 7 on the Russian coast of the Black Sea, near the town of Anapa, the Beta news agency reported. The date was announced by Gazprom representatives on Thursday. South Stream construction to start in December The head of Gazprom's project management department, Leonid Chugunov, told reporters from the countries included in the South Stream route, that the construction of the gas pipeline section through Serbia will start in December, but added that the date has yet to be determined. The works in Serbia, he explained, will kick off with the placement of a cornerstone for the compressor station near the border with Hungary. "The South Stream section through Serbia will be financed by the joint company of Srbijagas and Gazprom, in such a way that 30 percent will be pure funding and 70 percent from loans," Chugunov said. The entire South Stream gas pipeline is worth EUR 16 billion, of which si x billion for the section on the ground and 10 billion for the underwater section in the Black Sea. The building of the section through Serbia will cost EUR1.7 billion. The route of the South Stream gas pipeline will stretch from the Black Sea to the city of Varna in Bulgaria, and will enter Serbia near Zajecar and continue through Hungary and Slovenia, ending in Italy, 11 kilometers from the border with Slovenia. The gas pipeline will have two branches, both from Serbia - one toward Croatia and the other toward Republika Srpska. The "sea" segment of the South Stream will be at the depth of around two kilometers and 925 kilometers long, while the ground segment will be 1,455 kilometers long. Gazprom spokesman Sergey Kupriyanov said that intensive work is underway on resolving disputes with the European Union, adding that Russia and the EU will sign an agreement to define the status of the South Stream project.
