THE HAGUE The Hague Tribunal’s Secretariat has stated that former Republic of Srpska (RS) President Radovan Karadzic has requested to call almost 600 witnesses. The Secretariat said that the Tribunal had given the defendant 300 hours to present evidence but Karadzic has filed an appeal to the decision. The former RS president has requested that, among others, wartime member of Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Ejup Ganic, former Bosnia-Herzegovina Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic, Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegovic and Edin Garaplija testify in his trial. Spalinska said that witnesses had the right to refuse to testify but that the Tribunal could issue a court order that they could not ignore or reject if the court determined that their testimony was necessary. She said that the court could, in accordance with the Hague Tribunal’s rules, order any person to appear as a witness and testify in court if their testimony is necessary or relevant for the trial. The Hague Tribunal Secretariat’s Spokeswoman Magdalena Spalinska has said that the Tribunal now awaits a decision of the Appeals Chamber and a decision on the final number of witnesses that Karadžić will be allowed to call.

The former RS president has requested that, among others, wartime member of Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Ejup Ganić, former Bosnia-Herzegovina Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Haris Silajdžić, Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegović and Edin Garaplija testify in his trial.
