MOSCOW Starting on November 1, the crews of regular airliners from the European Union (EU) will be required to have visas in order to enter Russia. This was announced on Friday in Moscow by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Alexander Lukashevich. Russia introducing visas for pilots from EU He said that because of the lack of a harmonized EU position on the question of official passports, work was being delaying on a draft modernized visa regime agreement between Russia and the EU. During the negotiations on the simplification of that regime, the Russian side proposed that the visa-free regime applies to official passports, but during the last round of negotiations the policy was limited to holders of official passports with electronic information carriers. According Lukashevich, at the request of the MFA and the Russian Ministry of Transport, the Border Service of the Federal Security Services decided not to hold airplane crew members without visas liable to minor charges, and that this policy would be in place through October 31. After that date, an extension of the moratorium would not be provided, the diplomat said, adding that visas would become a requirement regardless of whether the crew planned to leave the aircraft while in the territory of Russia, or stay inside.
