It is estimated that around 100,000 people in Serbia live below the lower bound of the poverty line at the moment.

BELGRADE It is estimated that around 100,000 people in Serbia live below the lower bound of the poverty line at the moment. This is according to Labor, Employment and Social Policy Ministry State Secretary Brankica Jankovic. 100,000 people in Serbia live below poverty line On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which is being marked worldwide on October 17, Jankovic told Tanjug that the old, single-member, rural households and children fell into the most vulnerable category, in southern and eastern Serbia in particular. “At the moment, around 86,000 people receive social assistance, and around 400,000 children the adequate allowance on a monthly basis,” Jankovic stressed. The lowest social assistance benefit in Serbia amounts to RSD 6,774 for a single-member household and the highest - RSD 21,500 for a six-member family. “Apart from the social assistance and children's allowance, the Labor Ministry secures funds for 72 soup kitchens with around 32,000 beneficiaries,” Jankovic said. “Moreover, the ministry provides 41,540 packages of foodstuffs and toiletries for the families in need in 105 municipalities,” she added. Jankovic voiced hope that government measures and the implementation of the law on social entrepreneurship would help Serbia reduce the poverty rates. (Beta) Tanjug
